From Fish Sticks to Sushi Rolls - Learn About the Culinary Diversity of Pollock

Traditionally the breaded goodness inside fish sticks and fish and chips has been Atlantic cod, but due to the declining health of the fish in these waters attention has shifted to the Pacific Ocean for its finned tastiness. Cousin to the Atlantic cod is the Pacific Alaska pollock. The quickness in maturation and high reproduction rates make pollock a sustainable and economical choice. The demand for fish similar to cod persists and the pollock population can withstand the fishing pressure as well as maintain the well being of their surrounding environment. Fisherman use mid-water trawls to catch pollock, which inflict little harm on surrounding sea life and bottom habitats.

Along with its sustainability, Pacific Alaska pollock possess a white, mild, low fat meat that can be incorporated into meals in a number of ways. When buying pollock it is best to buy the fillets frozen since the fish comes from far off waters. Only if the market can guarantee that the fish has never been frozen before should you buy unfrozen fillets, but buying them frozen is the safest bet. Once you have acquired the tasty meat, try out one of the many forms of preparation that suit pollock the best. Frying is a great way to cook pollock, whether it be fish sticks or fish and chips, the light, mild flavor of pollock is perfect for deep frying.

It is best to avoid trying to broil Pacific Alaska pollock since it is a very delicate process requiring extreme care because the slightest misjudgment can easily result in dried out fillets. Pollock can also be used as imitation crab, and often is a part of any California roll in mid-range sushi restaurants. If you are looking to make sushi for dinner but do not quite have the cash to spring for real king or snow crab, pollock has a similar enough flavor to achieve the desired effect. Most importantly you must not consume this fish raw. Pollock can sometimes play host to parasitic worms that can set up house in you if you eat the fish raw. However, once the fish is cooked the worms become harmless and are no longer something to be concerned about. From deep fried to being snuggly rolled with some seaweed, Pacific Alaska pollock is a versatile, tasty, and sustainable choice of fish for any dinner table.

Ideas For a Family Halloween Pumpkin Patch Party

Take Halloween one step beyond trick or treating and the pre-school parade by planning a family Halloween party. There are tons of Halloween adventures like Haunted Houses for the kids when they get a bit older, so why not start your own adventure for your little ones. Plan a Pumpkin Patch Carnival for them as well as their parents, your friends and family. It could be almost a mini-Oktoberfest for the adults with fun and games for the kids. This is not an expensive proposition...plan to have it at home

Turn your backyard into a "Halloween Midway of Fun" with lots of games, activities and prizes for the kids and great camaraderie for the adults. Plan a series of game stations around your yard, just like a carnival. Organize with it with your friends. Maybe you have some that will be game to wear costumes and serve as the "carnival barkers". You can decide if you want them to wear their costumes, depending on the games you plan.

Have a "Halloween Hut" set up for all the food. Surely a couple of your guests will volunteer to grill burgers and dogs. Have them served up with bags of chips or crackers, a box of juice or bottle of water served up in a plastic pumpkin. You can find them at the dollar store without breaking the bank. You can set up little picnic tables or simply set out some blankets on the yard. You may want to have soda and beer for the adults. A big veggie platter would also be great for both the kids and adults! If you want to spend some money, you could rent a popcorn machine or a cotton candy maker too.

Go to the local market and buy enough small pumpkins for all the kids, plus a couple of extras. Next hide them all over the yard before everyone arrives. Depending on the age group, they can hunt on their own or go along with Mom or Dad. What is the reason for the extras? You want to make sure everyone finds one. The last thing you need is one sad tot who can't find a pumpkin and you can't remember where in the yard you hid them all!

A pumpkin decorating station is another possibility. You could use paint, but realize you risk certain disaster for one of them if they are in costume. Paint markers would be safer alternatives. I have even seen some pumpkin decorating kits with stickers at the craft stores. Another alternatives would be letting a couple of crafty friends carve them into Jack O Lanterns!

There are great Halloween music CD's that you could play for some background ambiance, but I think with all the laughter and excitement the music may be drowned out. The easy part about this party is that your house and /or yard will already be decorated for the season! Halloween party invitations are abundant, so find ones you like or even make your own on the computer. There are lots of sites with free pintables. The game stations can be Halloween versions of what you would find at carnival. When they are ready to start playing the games, they will have their "pumpkin bucket" from lunch and can begin visiting the game stations to win tickets or candy!

So start now and plan your own Halloween celebration for the little ones as well as a fun autumn afternoon for the adults! Let them expand their Halloween fun beyond trick or treating. If you need further ideas for the games and prizes, check out the Carnival party ideas at Celebration Ideas Online.

Coconut Fruit Kabobs

Coconut fruit kabobs will please every fruit lover and make a believer out of those who don't like fruit that much (who would that be???) Make them ahead for picnics, BBQs and parties. They are healthy and everyone loves them. Make more than you think you'll need!

What you'll need:

- 1 medium-size red apple (unpeeled)

- 1 medium-size pear (unpeeled)

- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice

- 20 unsweetened pineapple chunks

- 20 seedless red or green grapes

- 20 fresh strawberries (capped)

- Coconut Dressing (recipe below)

- 20 wooden skewers

This simple appetizer takes about 20 minutes to prepare and you can make the kabobs ahead of time and store in the refrigerator. I love that!

All you need to do is cut each apple and pear into 20 bite-size pieces. Place the cut fruit in a bowl and toss with the lemon juice gently. Not only does this add great flavor, it keeps the pear and apple bits from turning brown.

Next, alternate an apple, pear, grape, pineapple, and strawberry on a wooden skewer. Do this until all skewers are filled up.

Place skewers on a beautiful platter and put the Coconut dressing in the center. See the recipe for the dressing below.

Coconut Dressing:

- 1 1/2 cup vanilla low-fat yogurt

- 1 1/2 Tablespoon flaked coconut

- 1 1/2 Tablespoon reduced-calorie orange marmalade

Simply combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and stir well. Serve with the kabobs. You can either drip a little dressing on each kabob, or make the dressing available for dipping.

Deeelish!

Is Obesity Contagious?

Unlike chicken pox, polio, and even the common cold, obesity is not spread by germs in the air or by shaking hands with an obese person. Although the number of overweight and obese people in the United States keeps rising (the last numbers I heard were around 60% of adults and 25% of children), obesity can't be cured by a vaccine. Washing your hands more often won't help keep you slim and trim.

We've all heard a lot of news recently about the bird flu, and the possibility of a world-wide pandemic. A pandemic could kill millions of people around the world in a very short time. Obesity can also be a killer, but may involve a much slower and more painful death.

Children who are obese are now developing diseases which, in the past, were only seen in adults. Type II diabetes was formerly called adult-onset diabetes, because it was rarely seen in children. It is now frequently being diagnosed in children under the age of 10. Type II diabetes can cause very serious health problems, including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, amputation of limbs, and much more. Parents who wouldn't dream of starting the car unless their children were buckled securely in their car seats are turning a blind eye to their children's potential health problems caused by poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles.

What is the answer? Children don't need temporary diets. Their bones and muscles are growing rapidly, and they need good nutrition to ensure proper growth. The best solution is a lifestyle change.

Start by restricting the time your children watch TV or play video games. Most pediatricians recommend no more than 2 hours a day of screen time (except for homework done on the computer). Will your children be angry at you? Probably, at least for the first few days, but they'll get over it! Remind them that you love them, and loving them means that you will sometimes have to make decisions based on what is best for them and not necessarily what they prefer. Use some of the time that they now spend watching TV for family activities involving physical activity. Play ball in the yard or park, romp with the dog, fly a kite, take a walk or bike ride after dinner. Take turns picking the activity for the day.

Eat more meals at home and limit fast food or pizza delivery to one or two times a week. Make your pizzas veggie pizzas with thin crust, and skip the extra cheese. Stop buying sodas for home use, and drink water, fat-free milk, or unsweetened iced tea. Instead of snacking on chips, cookies, and ice cream, stock up on fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, and nuts. Make sugar-free gelatin with fresh fruit, and top with fat-free frozen whipped topping. Spread low-fat plain yogurt on a chocolate graham cracker, add another cracker to make a sandwich, and freeze. The result is a healthier "ice-cream sandwich". Look for other low-calorie snacks in magazines or online recipe sites.

If you need help planning well-balanced meals, look for programs or websites that offer menus based on the USDA Food Pyramid, or consult with a registered dietician if your family has food allergies or medical conditions that restrict certain food groups.

If your child is overweight, his primary concern may be physical appearance. That is important too, because his self-esteem and confidence may suffer because of teasing or bullying by other children.

Assure him that you want to help, and that changing his lifestyle will improve his appearance and confidence at the same time it improves his health.

Treat obesity like the serious health risk that it is, and let's work toward starting a "pandemic" of good health for future generations!

A Teddy Bear Birthday Party Theme

Many small children love their teddy bears and other stuffed animals. I got the inspiration for a teddy bear party from a "teddy bear picnic" my town held - it was a huge success, and I knew teddy bears are still a great way to go for the little ones. Here are some ideas I came up with after the picnic.

Make Invitations With Your Little Ones

My kids really enjoyed making bear "sand art" at the picnic. It was a simple craft and you could easily do it with your kids to create invitations. Take card stock and cut it into bear shapes. Then use a glue stick, or Elmer's white glue, to spread a layer of glue over the card stock bear. Use colored sand (get this at any craft store) to decorate your bears.

You can write over the sand with a permanent marker, or you can glue a smaller card over the bear's belly with the invitation details.

Other ideas for invitations include just decorating your card stock bears with crayons, markers, paint, or rubber stamps. These ideas may be a little less messy than colored sand, but not quite so exciting for little kids to get!

Decorating for the Party

You can find a lot of teddy bear themed decorations in party catalogs. Some feature characters like Winnie the Pooh, and others have more classic bears. You can also create your own decorations. Black and yellow streamers to remind the kids of bees could be a good idea. Everyone knows honeybees and bears go together!

Of course you should try and have as many teddy bears around as possible. Other stuffed friends like puppies and kittens may be welcome, too.

If you're using a picnic theme, you can put red and white, or blue and white, checkered decorations up. Have picnic baskets and blankets spread about.

Food for the Little Bears

Get back to the honey and the bees here! Peanut butter and honey sandwiches are a good idea - you can even find a bear cookie cutter to make bear-shaped finger sandwiches. Other "picnic like" foods such as chips, veggie sticks with dip, etc. are also going to be hits with little ones.

Make a bear cake and bear-shaped cookies for a sweet treat.

Party Activities

Another great idea from the Teddy Bear Picnic my town held was bear goodie bags. The kids made the bags themselves. Find small, inexpensive drawstring bags. Ours were made of a light linen-type fabric. Then get stamp pads and bear, forest, and bee rubber stamps and let the kids make their own goody bags!

You can use paper plates to create bear masks for everyone at the party. Kids really enjoy masks. If you feel really creative you can make a little nub "tail" for each little bear at the party using fabric scraps.

Play "pin the honey pot on the bear" as a twist on pin the tail on the donkey. Draw out a large bear on butcher paper or poster board and cut out little honey pots from card stock. See which child can get it closest to the bear's hand (or maybe his mouth!)

If you've got even basic sewing machine skills you can make some quick yellow beanbags. Draw a bear on the bottom of a cardboard box. Cut the bears mouth out and let the children take turns tossing their "honey pot" beanbags into the bear's mouth!

Gift Bags

At the end of the party, fill everyone's gift bag with teddy bear Graham crackers. Look for other teddy favors you can add, such a jewelry or mini-bears. Or just fill with small items children love, like little yo-yos and jump ropes. These items are always a hit.

With a little planning and work your teddy bear party can be a huge hit. It's a simple theme that always works well for little children.

Vegetarian and Vegan Meal Planning Ideas PLUS ... Dairy Free Muffin Recipe

In a vegan or vegetarian diet, it may take time to explore new foods and develop some form of routine to it. There are many different products on the market today for vegans and vegetarians to choose from - keep experimenting to find your or your families personal preferences and tastes.

You should be-able to find quite a good amount of vegetarian and vegan products at supermarkets, natural health food stores and co-ops.

When baking, you can use substitutes like egg replacers, cornstarch or bananas to replace eggs.

Soy, rice and nut milks are great replacements for cow's milk. Plus there are many other dairy alternatives around like: vegan cheese, yoghurts, frozen non-dairy ice creams, and cream cheeses. These are all easily sourced through health stores or supermarkets worldwide.

If you are stuck for ideas on some quick easy menu ideas, here are some sample meal menu items for you to consider:

** Breakfast

- Pancakes

- Soy Yoghurts

- Fruit Smoothies

- Wholemeal Toast or Cereals

** Lunch/Dinner

- Veggie Mock Meat and salad sandwich

- Veggie Sausages or hot dogs

- Veggie or Soy Burger

- Simple Prepared Salads

- Tofu Kebabs or Wraps

- Veggie Fried Rice

- Tomato & Pasta Bake

- Soup or Curry Vegetables

- Veggie Stir fry with Tofu, tempeh, or seitan

- Baked Vegetables with Rosemary & Garlic Herbs

** Snacks /Dessert

- Cookies

- Cake

- Non-Dairy Ice Cream

- Dried Fruits & Nuts

- Fresh Fruits

- Chickpeas

- Popcorn

- Pretzels

- Soy or Veggie Crisps or Chips

- Vegan Pies

So as you can see there are an abundance of tasty foods on offer for vegetarians of all kinds, the tastes and wonders of one's food choices is only limited by one's own imagination.

If have you ever wondered how vegetarians, vegans or people just wishing to avoid dairy products make delicious tasting and looking cakes and sweets without much effort at all?

Unless you are a vegetarian or 100% animal free cooker, chances are that you have never cooked without animal ingredients like eggs and dairy. In fact, if you don't know any vegetarians personally you might not even be aware that you can cook without any animal by-products like, eggs and dairy.

Vegetarians are able to maintain a very healthy diet eating any number of traditional meals or sweets minus animal by-products.

And you don't have to be a vegetarian to benefit from such things, even if you'd just like to cut down on animal by-products for the many health benefits involved or if you are lactose intolerant, have vegetarian friends you'd like to cook for or are trying to avoid cholesterol . . . you don't have to feel you will miss out on all those wonderful sweets and treats you feel you can't live without. Because cooking minus animal by-products is so simple and easy you won't believe it until you experience it for yourself.

So I urge you to try the below recipe for yourself and then decide if vegetarians just eat rabbit food or not. You might be surprised. And you might even be shocked that you won't even notice these muffins are not cooked using any eggs or diary.

** Dairy Free Choc Muffins

Ingredients:

1 cup water

1 tsp vanilla

1 Tbsp vinegar

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 cup sugar

1 tsp baking soda

1/3 cup coconut

1 and 1/2 cups flour

3 Tbsp cocoa or carob powder

Method:

1. Pre-heat oven to 190C.

2. Mix first 6 ingredients in a bowl until blended through.

3. Sift the remaining ingredients and blend in bowl until just combined.

4. Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Servings: 6 large muffins or 12 smaller muffins

If you are not a vegetarian but are considering becoming one don't let the fear of eating egg or diary free stop you. If you already are a vegetarian or don't eat dairy or eggs for other reasons, and have not tried cooking sweets, you might want to try it. It's so simple and easy if you know how and have access to proven recipes.

Using Potato Chips In Cooking

Many of think of potato chips as those crunchy chips we put on a plate alongside a sandwich. However potato chips can add a wonderful flavor to many recipes.

One of my favorite recipes using potato chips is something I call "Crunchy Chicken". I coat chicken pieces with either melted butter, mayonnaise, sour cream, or plain yogurt. You then roll the chicken pieces in crushed potato chips. My kids have always loved this recipe. If you use flavored potato chips, such as barbeque or sour cream and onion, this will add to the flavor of the chicken. I have always used chicken pieces with skin on. The skin ends up very crunchy and salty from the potato chips.

Have you ever put potato chips ON your sandwich? My kids have always loved putting potato chips right on the sandwich itself. You can do this with tuna fish sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or even egg salad sandwiches. Many of enjoy lettuce on our sandwich's as lettuce is crunchy. Well, so are potato chips.

Have you ever tried potato chip cookies?

Potato Chip Cookies

5 cups crushed potato chips

2 cups flour

1 cup each, brown sugar and white sugar

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk

3 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup chopped pecans (I prefer omitting these)

Mix crushed potato chips with the two sugars. Beat the two eggs and add to sugar and chips. Stir in milk and vanilla. Mix the flour and baking powder together and then slowly add to other mixture. Mix well. Grease baking sheet and drop by rounded teaspoonful. Bake at 375° for 10-12 minutes, or until golden.

Do you have a favorite brownie recipe? Next time you make the brownies, try adding 3/4 cup crushed potato chips to the mix. If the brownie recipe calls for salt, do not add salt, when adding the potato chips.

Potato chips are not just for munching with your sandwich.

Bon Appetite!!

Kahlua Chocolate Bundt Cake

I really love this really moist cake, and am SHOCKED it calls for anything "boxed" because it doesn't taste like it! 1 pkg Dark Chocolate Cake Mix 1 (3.9oz) Instant Chocolate Pudding ( I use Chocolate Fudge) 16 oz Sour Cream 3 eggs 1/3 cup Veggie Oil 1/2 cup Kahlua 2 cups Dark Chocolate Chips (or semi sweet if you prefer) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt Pan. Stir ingredients until well blended but don't over do. In my opinion once the eggs are added if you over beat/stir it can make the cake crumble and/or dry....but blend well. Fold in the Chocolate Chips after all the other ingredients are blended. This batter is THICK, so spoon into the prepared pan. Bake in a preheated oven for 1 hour or until the cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool for 10 minutes then turn over on a wire rack. If you like you can dust with powdered sugar or cocoa powder. This is a killer cake for a box!

Healthy Snacks Will Keep You Pumped Throughout the Day

Portable healthy snacks are the latest trend in the snacking industry. Wrapped stringed cheese, Go-Gurt (portable yogurt), individually packaged vegetable portions with low-fat dip and 100-calorie potato chips or cookies are helping us to eat healthy, even when we feel we have no time to do so. To maintain a healthy weight and reduce our risk for heart disease or cancer, we have to be more mindful of eating a balanced diet packed with nutrients and controlling our calorie count. Luckily, manufacturers are responding to our needs with more products and offerings to help, and blogs are spreading more food snacks tips for packing the best lunch possible.

Do you rarely have time for a pleasant sit-down breakfast? Luckily, there are a number of morning-friendly, healthy food snacks to wake up your metabolism and provide you with the nutrients you need to get a fresh start. For a quick solution, try half a peanut butter sandwich on whole-wheat bread, low-sugar whole-grain granola bars (with at least 3 grams of fiber), 4-6 ounces of low-fat yogurt, some high-fiber cereal with dried fruit or a bowl of instant oatmeal with sliced peaches, if you've got five minutes.

Throughout the day, nothing kills our motivation like a heavy 30-minute lunch. Instead, healthy snacks can keep us pumped throughout the day. Dietitian-recommended options include a handful of unsalted or lightly salted dry-roasted nuts, a single serving pack of unsweetened applesauce with a few dry-roasted walnuts, a small apple with two tablespoons of peanut butter or one ounce of low-fat cheese, half a string cheese with a few pieces of fruit or whole grain crackers or pretzels with low-fat cheese. Raw foods, like vegetables, can be jazzed up with nacho cheese, low-fat ranch or no-fat veggie dip. Lunch snacks manufacturers have been making portable individual packets of carrots, celery, apple slices, nuts, low-fat cheese and other goodies to promote eating healthy.

"Look for snacks that contain protein with healthy carbohydrates and fats, and eat your snacks slowly so they fill you up," advises Baylor nutrition Professor Suzy Weems, PhD. There are many healthy snacks to choose from, so it can be easy to lose track of how our diets are stacking up throughout the day. A free community website, "Sparks People", allows users to enter the food they've eaten during the day into a database, which tallies up protein, calories, fat and other statistics to help keep track of weight loss goals.

You can easily burn belly fat and get a lean body if you follow these ten healthy eating habits. They are very simple tips but may not be easy to do. Eating healthy foods will lessen your cravings for junk food. You will also achieve balance emotionally as you are not eating as much sugar or processed foods which can cause energy spikes and crashes draining you of vitality and energy.

Healthy eating habits will help you achieve flat sexy abs and the lean body you desire.

So the first phase of this wonderful and nutritious eating plan is to be clear about what you cannot eat, junk food has to go! It comes back to the basics of not eating ice-cream, chips, candy and white things. I mean white bread, white flour foods, white rice and pasta. No sugar either!

You must develop good eating habits with foods that contain healthy nutrients:

Eat a large raw salad every day. Not so hard, right? You can eat raw veggies, such as tomatoes, lettuce, shredded carrots, cabbage, raw broccoli, snow peas, beets, green beans.
Eat steamed green veggies every day. Vegetables such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, string beans, bok choy and asparagus.
Eat some beans daily, about ½ cup. Kidney, pinto, black or gabenzo beans.
Eat raw seeds and nuts daily. Use more seeds if you want a flat belly.
Eat fruit daily. At least 4 fresh fruits and eat more berries and cherries. If you are trying to lose weight stay away from bananas, pineapple, peaches the real sweet fruit.
Have some veggie juice freshly squeezed.
Try to cut down on meat. Don't eat it every day. And when you do eat it make sure it's organic and lean.
Watch your salt intake, when cooking do not add salt!
Watch your oil intake. You can use a little for cooking since you are cutting down on butter and dairy. Only 1 tablespoon daily, which includes your salad dressing as well.
No coffee or alcohol as these set up cravings. Use herbal or green tea.It is a good idea to have 4-6 meals a day to keep blood sugar levels balanced but for a lot of people this is not realistic. It has been my experience that it can often set up a grazing pattern of non-stop eating! It's Ok if your meals are small and you are actually consuming less calories, no cheating here! As long as it's not a license to overeat and your calorie intake is within reason.

Just in case you are tempted eliminate all tempting foods. Get rid of it all from your house or car. No secret stashes. Remember only healthy foods! So if you do have a desperate attack you can only eat healthy foods because you do not have any candy stashes in the house or car, right?

If you need extra help join a support group (Overeaters Anonymous) especially if you cannot control your cravings. There are many and varied and can offer encouragement without judgment. The rewards are so worth it and the benefits of eating healthy foods are numerous.

Healthy Menu For Road Trip and Camping Meal Ideas

Traveling with food allergies can be a challenge. And parents who travel with a child or children suffering from severe food allergies have to plan ahead in order to be sure they are stocked with healthy foods to feed the family while away from home.

Here is a list of some of our favorite foods to eat while traveling on long road trips, as well as camping. We make some of the foods in advance and freeze them to be heated in our 12v car cook stove on the road. Since we cannot take the chance of eating out at restaurants, or hope that we stumble upon a health food store out on th back roads during our long road trips, this system has assisted us in getting out of the house, and miles down the road. Other great food options are now available in cans and packages at local health food stores which is very convenient. I make all our bread from scratch, including waffles, donuts, crackers, scones, pie crusts, etc, but many of these items are available dairy free and preservative free at your local health food stores too. Here are some of our favorites:

Breakfast Breakfast that needs to be heated that is vacuum sealed can be put in aluminum pan and heated in lunchbox stove. If your child can have goat milk, then use goat milk/cheese products otherwise omit.

Eggs and Toast served with fresh fruit, bacon, potatoes, and juice
Breakfast bars (homemade of course)
Pancakes and waffles with syrup or Agava nectar served with fresh fruit, bacon, potatoes, and juice
French toast with syrup and powdered sugar served with scrambled eggs, bacon, and juice
Bagel (homemade) served with mayo, no nitrate ham, tomato slice, and goat cheese
granola on yogurt with fresh fruit slices
gluten free cereal with rice milk
Country Skillet with diced potatoes, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, goat cheese, topped with egg, salt and pepper

Snacks Healthy snacks can be served cold, with minimal effort include:

No Nitrate Buffalo Jerky, homemade popcorn, chemical free chips, pretzels, homemade cookies
Fresh fruit, apple slices, bananas, oranges, strawberries, grapes, fresh veggies, carrot sticks, celery sticks, etc.
Dried fruit and nuts, dates, apricots, figs, plums, raisins, etc.
Canned fruit, baby oranges, fruit cocktail, apple sauce, peaches, etc.

Lunch Each meal includes side salad, side fruit, side veggie, and a homemade roll:

Sandwiches, egg salad, tuna salad, BLT, Turkey bacon and avocado, ham and goat cheese, etc.
Pasta, pasta salad, macaroni salad, rice noodle soup, healthy cup of soup, pasta with sauce, pasta with meatballs, pasta casserole

Bread - dinner rolls, toast with honey or jam, bread sticks, homemade crackers, etc.
Rice - white rice, brown rice, wild rice, Spanish rice, pilaf, couscous, etc.

Making Cold Appetizers

Cold appetizers are starter dishes that are taken cold. They precede the main dish. They are easily eaten and will help increase and maintain your appetite for the main dish. They are the reason why night party lovers are able to patiently wait till the late night meal. They are commonly used in restaurants, hotels, or food cafe's and even in homes.

There are various types of cold appetizers. The veggie pizza is a five star cold appetizer. It is coated with cream cheese and eaten with cream cheese and fresh vegetables. The other type in this category is the Red Onion Chip Dip. This is prepared using softened cheese, salad vegetables for decorations and Worcester sauce.

Cold appetizers are quite convenient to use as they can be prepared in advance and frozen. However, you should take care to ensure that the correct flavor is achieved and maintained. This can be done by ensuring that the correct preparation method and freezing temperature is used. The quality of these kind of starter dishes depends greatly upon their preparation and preservation techniques.

Other than achieving the correct flavor, you should also ensure that the kind of starter dish that you choose goes with the main dish you are serving and also the taste of the people you are cooking for. To help you achieve this, you can enroll for cookery classes, read magazines, watch cooking demos, or search the Internet for the best ways of presenting and preparing this kind of dish.

Top Ten Tips to Healthy Eating

Most people are familiar with the "Top Ten List" regularly presented by that late-night talk show host from Indiana. Although his lists tend to be tongue-in-cheek and irreverent, the following is a top ten list with some real gravitas. Without any drum roll or special music, here is the list of Top 10 tips for Healthy Eating:

Number 10 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Eat fresh, whole foods whenever possible. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the futuristic cartoon show "The Jetsons," especially the part where they ate their meals, which, rather than being real food, consisted of little pills dispensed by a clever machine. A roast beef pill, a mashed potato pill, with an apple pie pill for dessert. Although we haven't gotten there yet, there is so much in the grocery store aisles these days that would barely qualify as real food, when you take into account its nutritional value, lack of fiber and the potentially harmful ingredients it contains. Even if you are on a limited budget, try to choose as many fresh, whole foods as you can afford, and leave the over-processed, "futuristic" foods on the shelf. I don't think much of the Jetsons' concept of food, but I would like one of those robot maids to clean my house!

Number 9 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Buy local, and even organic, if possible. There is a whole movement out there of people who are choosing to buy from local growers and foregoing out-of-season items and items shipped in from far away places. The advantages of this choice are many. Your food will be fresher, cost less, you will support your local economy and you will have fewer worries about the growing practices that may affect the healthfulness of your food. Along with that, the advantage of buying from farms and orchards that are not only local, but also organic, is that you will be consuming fewer toxins for your body to contend with and encouraging fewer chemicals to be added to our soil and water.

Number 8 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Eat lots of fresh, colorful vegetables-either raw or lightly cooked. Vegetables are at the core of any healthy eating plan, and the substances that give them their vivid color seem to protect against many health-destroying maladies. Vegetables are loaded with nutrients, low in calories and are available in so many varieties as to satisfy any palate. Keep in mind that cooking can destroy some of the nutritional value in vegetables, so choose methods such as steaming or lightly sautéing whenever possible. When you were a kid, and your mom said, "Eat your vegetables," she was giving you excellent advice!

Number 7 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Wash all fresh produce with a commercial vegetable rinse-sometimes called a "Veggie Wash" -or a weak solution of vinegar and water. (I have also heard that baking soda works, but I have never tried it.) Don't just use plain water. Even if you are removing the skin, such as with melons or avocados, wash the item first to avoid contaminating the inner flesh. It goes without saying, that you should keep meat separate from fresh produce, both in the refrigerator and during preparation, sanitizing your utensils and cutting boards in between. I would not recommend using dish soap or other poisonous products to wash fresh produce. Instead, use a product that will kill the germs, but will not harm you, should any residue inadvertently remain on the food. It would be counter-productive to get rid of the bacteria only to get sick from the soap!

Number 6 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Limit your consumption of meat by treating it more as a condiment or side dish. Even if you are a meat lover, it is better to eat smaller portions in favor of items from the other food groups, including whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits. It does not take a lot of meat to provide your protein requirements for a meal-some experts say a serving the size of a regular deck of cards will do-and many of the other foods you eat have some protein, too. In this way, you can reduce the amount of artery-clogging, saturated fat in your diet as well as increase your intake of fiber and other nutrients, and make your meal easier to digest. You might even try some meatless meals once in a while! After all, even Popeye ate a meal of spinach at least once on every show!

Number 5 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Know the difference between good carbs and bad ones. Although carbs in general have gotten a bad reputation with the popularity of the low-carb diets, your body needs carbohydrates to be healthy. Then again, there are what we might call "good carbs" and "bad carbs." Good carbs are all those wonderful fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes that you know about, while bad carbs are the white flour products, such as cookies, pastries, doughnuts, cakes, pies, chips-you get the drift. A rule of thumb is, if it's in the lunchroom at work as a birthday treat or in a vending machine, it is probably a bad carb-except, of course if the birthday boy is the office health-nut or the vending machine is at the health foods store!

Number 4 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Eat healthy fats. I was visiting a friend recently, and she told me her grandmother, who lived to be ninety, grew up on cooking done exclusively with lard. I knew her grandmother, and she was a diminutive, feisty old lady who never sat still and worked like a Trojan all her life. Unfortunately, we are all not like that. It's possible that if you are extremely active, eat simple, unprocessed food all your life, grown on yours or your neighbor's farm, cooked in lard (that you probably rendered yourself), and you have good genes, you will also live to be ninety. However, the odds are against you. More studies than I can cite, have shown that consuming more mono-unsaturated fats, such as olive oil, instead of the more saturated varieties, will significantly lower your risk of developing heart disease and even some cancers. I know. I know. Lard still makes the flakiest piecrust. If only your arteries got a vote!

Number 3 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Choose more fiber-rich foods. Even if you are sick of hearing the word fiber, it's better than being sick from not getting enough of this important carbohydrate. It's not difficult to get sufficient fiber if you know what you are doing. Each time you choose whole grain over processed grains, each time you eat a piece of fruit instead of a piece of candy, each time you snack on raw veggies instead of potato chips, each time you order a bean burrito instead of a chicken one, you have added fiber to your diet. Even a sesame seed bun has more fiber than a plain one. Put some blueberries on your cereal. Have a baked sweet potato. Add some shredded zucchini to your pancake batter. Every little bit helps you to reach the 25-30 grams of fiber recommended for adults each day. In addition to the health benefits of getting enough fiber, just think, with all that time you won't be spending in the "throne" room, waiting for-well you know-you could maybe take up a new hobby!

Number 2 on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Limit junk food, and if possible, find a healthy but satisfying substitute. In case you're wondering, "junk food" is all of those over-processed, empty-calorie foods that we love to eat. It may not be easy for you, but you can change your palate to prefer healthier foods. One thing you can do is to find a healthier substitute for your favorite junk foods. For instance, when was the last time you popped some popcorn in a little oil with a bit of good quality unprocessed salt? It tastes wonderful and it's a whole food without the chemicals or additives or anything that would adulterate it into a junk food. Of course, it still has calories, but just remember to eat it in moderation. I have one of those old-fashioned poppers that stirs the oil and seeds while they pop, but my dad used to make the best popcorn in a Dutch oven on the stove. Try it, you'll like it!

And the Number 1 item on the list of 10 Tips to Healthy Eating is:

Drink water as your beverage of choice. Years ago, when bottled water first hit as a beverage choice on fast food menus and in vending machines, I can remember a friend being shocked that I would actually pay money for water. Soda she could understand, but water? I told her then that water is a better value for your money than soda, and I still believe that. Our bodies need water to function well. Not soda. Not energy drinks. Not coffee. Not juice. Not tea. Clean, pure water. Of course, when we drink any liquids, or even when we eat juicy foods, we get some water. The problem is that everything that we eat or drink except water has to be digested and filtered and processed in varying degrees by our bodies, and that requires-you guessed it-more water! So, don't save that beautiful stemware just for when you are drinking wine. Fill a glass to the brim with the best beverage around-ice cold, crystal clear, thirst quenching water-and relax and sip your way to vibrant health

Summer Finger Foods

The range of summer finger foods is vast, and there are plenty of delicious options to choose from. The following is a look at some of the fun options for summer finger foods.

Chips and Dips: You can be as traditional as tortilla or corn chips and salsa, or opt for something more original like pita chips with spinach artichoke dip. Remember, with chips you can use cheese sauces, chili sauces, bean dips, avocado dips, sour cream dips, and more. So, don't discount chips and dips because it is expected, capitalize on it because of the variety.

Fruits and Dips: There is something about dipping finger foods, and fruits make for great dippers. You can use any number of items for dipping into. For example, you could do a chocolate type dip, fondue, or fountain style. You could do a caramel dip. You could do a yogurt type dip. You can do a whipped cream dip. There are several fabulous fruit dip recipes on the Internet, so cash in on them.

Finger Sandwiches: Sandwiches are the all time finger food. You can make delicate sandwiches like cucumber sandwiches for more formal events, or you can make hearty sandwiches for things like baseball parties, and neighborhood BBQs.

Veggies: Veggies are always a great finger food, and healthy too. You can go with a traditional veggie tray, or you can get creative and marinate veggies in balsamic and olive oil, or grill some veggies, or serve them with special dips.

Pre-made Heated Items: This is where you really open up the doors with finger foods, but to serve these kinds you have to be in a location with an oven. You can serve things like meatballs in a tomato sauce, mini sausages in a barbecue sauce, chicken kabobs in a Teriyaki sauce, Thai chicken balls, mini quiches, mini pizzas, toasted breads with dips, etc. Basically you can take your favorite foods and make them mini. You can serve coconut shrimp with a plum sauce, fish bites with tartar sauce, mini burgers, Bruschetta with toasted bread, mini burritos, etc. Really the possibilities here are endless.

Desserts: Desserts make great finger foods, and in the summer you can enjoy plenty of fresh fruit toppings on those desserts. You can do chocolate covered strawberries, just be sure you have refrigeration. You can do mini cheesecakes, cookies, brownie bites, mini muffins, tarts topped with fruits, custards, whipped cream. Again, you can simply take your favorite desserts and make them in miniature sizes. Get a mini muffin pan, and cook your desserts in mini proportions.

How to Lose Weight Without Going on a Slimming Diet

Being healthier and looking good are the main objective of millions of people. The most effective way in which these can be achieved is the adoption of a specific slimming diet. However, almost all, if not all, of the famous and not so popular weight loss nutritional plans simply do not work. Some are impossible to keep while others have very dangerous potential side effects. Most importantly, even if the desired results are accomplished, the pounds lost soon come back. You can try an alternative approach instead. It is much easier for you and more comfortable for your body, plus it is more effective.

Instead of counting calories, simply try to have as much diversity in the foods you consume as possible. Do not exclude any type of food groups from your diet, instead have smaller portions of different dishes. This rule should be definitely used when you have restaurant lunches and dinners. The trick is simple and effective, the more different tastes you eat, the more satisfied you will feel. So, even with less food you will not crave for more.

Have more vegetarian dishes in your diet. You do not have to eat only meat in order to have strength to go through the day. Plus, you will see that the well prepared veggie meals can really taste well, especially if they come with a lot of fresh herbs. It is best to have vegetarian dinners at least once a week as a start. You can even set a special night and actually experiment with new foods in your kitchen.

Have only healthy snacks. The reality is that we tend to eat junk food in between meals simply because it is easier to get to and tastier to consume. You can reduce your calories intake just by throwing away all the sweet candy and chocolate bars and muffins along with the chips. Have a banana or another fruit, some yoghurt or simply a handful of raw nuts to boost your energy and lose weight.

Reduce the stress in your life. You eat more and unhealthy foods just because you are anxious or you are feeling down. So, try to live a happier life and get soothing and satisfaction from other sources. Get along with your friends more often and go out to have fun. Go to a yoga class, which will make you more relaxed and will provide you with an excellent work out. Choose any type of hobby that you find interesting and rewarding.

Hummus Recipe

What's the best humus recipe? Well, for some, they like their hummus a little more firm and some like it a bit more creamy. However you like your hummus it is a delicious and nutritious snack that can go with chips, pita bread, (we like to crisp up our pita bread in the oven) or vegetables such as carrots, sliced red and green peppers, cucumbers and celery or any other veggie you can dip into a spread.

Hummus is made from chickpeas or you may run across some hummus recipes that call for garbanzo beans which are just the Spanish name for chickpeas. Hummus is the Arabic word for chickpea and it is a popular side dish found all over the world, but especially popular in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and India. Even though hummus is found and enjoyed all over the world, there is no agreed upon country of origin. However, it is know as one of the oldest prepared dishes in the world.

A standard hummus recipe consists of chickpeas, tahini (a required ingredient), olive oil, garlic (the more the better) salt and lemon juice. Variations of hummus can be created by adding other spices such as cumin and paprika, or other ingredients such as pine nuts, parsley, cilantro, roasted red peppers, basil pesto, roasted garlic, eggplant, ground pepper, spicy red pepper and the list goes on. Many grocery stores have started featuring a plethora of different types of hummus as this dish continues to become more and more popular.

We usually end up making our hummus recipe with a 15 ounce can of chickpeas, 2 cloves of garlic, a whole lemon, a half tablespoon of salt and 2 tablespoons each of both tahini and virgin olive oil. As you mix the ingredients up in your food processor, you can add a little water to get the consistency just the way to like it. We make it somewhat thick, but a Middle Eastern restaurant we frequent in town makes it fairly thin and we like that as well.

Hummus is one of the most popular dishes in all the world and it is a healthy and nutritious snack and complement to many different meals in a multitude of different cultures. If you haven't tried hummus, you don't know the delicious treat you are missing.

Creamy Shrimp Campacho In Tomato Cups

Creamy Shrimp *Campacho In Tomato Cups is an easy to prepare, fresh, sophisticated appetizer that takes only a half an hour from start to serve. Shrimp quickly cooked in butter, Italian dressing, lime juice, garlic and pepper combine beautifully with the rich robust flavors of Garden Vegetable Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Clamato juice and other ingredients to form a delectable creamy cocktail inside a bowl made of a hollowed out tomato. Served cold, alongside fine diced avocado, red onion, cilantro, jalapenos, tomatoes, cucumbers, lime wedge and tortilla chips, it makes for a colorful, delicious and "gourmet" first round of your meal. Note: "Campacho" is not an actual word but rather my descriptive of the sauce that is derived by using attributes, ingredients and alternatives of both Campechana and Gazpacho to form the word Campacho. The definitions of each follow: 1. Campechana is a Mexican seafood cocktail with shrimp, some sort of whitefish or abalone, scallops, oysters, mussels, octopus, and sometimes baby squid, also diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, Clamato and Lime Juices. Campechana is served hot or cold and usually with the chopped vegetables laid at the base of the cocktail rather than integrated, allowing the person eating the delectable to add ingredients to their taste. 2. Gazpacho is a cold Spanish tomato-based raw vegetable soup, originating in the southern region of Andalusia, which includes finely chopped avocados, cucumbers, onions, and peppers. Gazpacho ...

How to Make a Sensational Breakfast Menu with a Light Fluffy Pancake Recipe that Everyone Will Love

There's nothing like a nice full and filling breakfast in the morning.
A balanced breakfast with plenty of choice makes a great start to any day!

How hard is it for you to get your entire family together for a sit-down breakfast? Don't let breakfast become endangered, add some light fluffy pancakes to your menu and live a great life!

Pancakes are so versatile and easy to make. I will show you how easy it is for you to make light fluffy pancakes that are tasty and almost melt in your mouth.

These light and fluffy pancakes are great for kids of all ages as you can add just about any topping you like or simply eat them like cupcakes. They are not too sweet so you can enjoy the nostalgic taste of maple syrup on top.

You can use ingredients straight from the fridge - which makes this pancake batter recipe a great last minute breakfast item.

I recommend using an electric beater to save time when possible. Save your time for sharing some valuable moments with your entire family at your breakfast table.

-* Light and Fluffy Pancake Recipe *-

Preparation Time: Less than 10 minutes
Cooking Time: Approximately 5 to 10 minutes

Makes about two dozen pancakes.

Ingredients you will need:

- 1/4 cup butter

- 1/4 cup sugar (or icing sugar)

- 1 egg

- 1 1/4 cups self-raising flour (sifted)

- 2/3 cup of milk (light or low fat is ok, you can also just use water or a combination of water and milk)

- vanilla essence

Method:

- Beat butter and sugar until creamed or until butter is a lighter colour.

- Add the egg to the mixture, then add flour around the mixture and pour in the milk and vanilla essence.

- Mix all ingredients together until well mixed and smooth. If for some reason your pancake batter mixture is a little thick, stop the mixing and quickly add a little more milk or water. (If you are hand-beating the batter, start from the center of the mixture and beat in one direction only.)

The texture that you are looking for is a thick but liquid-y batter that you can easily pour onto the frying pan.

- Next, heat up your frying pan until it is hot. If you need to, add some oil to the pan. I use a French crêpe frying pan so I don't need to use any oil at all, but if you have to, try to use spray oil.

- Reduce heat and pour pancake batter onto pan to the size/es that you want.

- Let the pancake raise and brown slightly before flipping over.

When you flip the pancake over to cook the other side, you should see that the pancake is raising faster.

Make sure that the heat of the pan isn't too high. A good tip is to make sure that you don't see any heat smoke coming from the pan.

A safeguard way to ensure that your pancakes become light and fluffy is to cook on low heat, but I find that keeping the pan on medium low is usually ok. Just turn down the heat after a couple of batches to reduce pan temperature.

Here are some creative add-ons that you can use with your fluffy pancakes:

Blueberry Pancakes

- Add blueberries into the batter at the last minute.

Chocolate Pancakes

- Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of cocoa with the flour before mixing.

Choc-Chip Pancakes

- Cook your pancakes very thin on one side, sprinkle some choc-chips onto one pancake, flip another one over the choc-chips (so that it's sandwiched) and continue cooking on low heat. Turn over and cook the other side.

Almond Pancakes

- Add flaked almonds to the mixture at the last minute.

No more sit-down breakfast meals only on Sundays, this pancake batter recipe is fast to prepare and make. Rejoice the loving environment of what being a family means.

Homemade Flour Tortilla Chips

I love chips. I love any kind of chips, especially these flour tortilla chips that you can make right at home. And it's easy!

Flour tortilla chips are lighter and a little flakier than corn tortilla chips. It's hard to say which is better. I like these because they give a little more variety to your every day chips and salsa experience. Try making some of these flour tortilla chips and mix in some homemade corn tortilla chips the next time you have a Super Bowl Party or some other type of gathering.

The flour tortilla chips don't store as well as the corn tortilla chips, but I doubt you'll have any leftovers anyway! Make sure you make more than you think you'll need. They will disappear faster than lightning.

What you'll need:

- 12 flour tortillas

- 2 quarts of safflower or sunflower oil

- sea salt to taste (optional)

- electric fryer

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F.

Divide your flour tortillas into 2 stacks and cut each stack into 8 wedges. Spread the wedges on a single layer on paper towels and let dry for 10 minutes. This is the secret to nice, light, flaky chips.

Pour the oil into your electric fryer or deep-fat fryer to a depth of 4- 5 inches. You can also use a heavy pot if you don't have either type of fryer. Make sure you the oil only goes up to about halfway on the sides of your container.

Heat the oil to 375 - 400 degrees F. Once the temperature is in that range, add a handful of tortilla wedges. Fry in small batches and avoid crowding. Nobody likes to be crowded! Not even chips!

Remove the chips with a slotted spoon when they start to look crispy. Put them on a paper towel to drain and season with salt if you want to. Do not fry them too long!

Transfer the chips to a baking sheet and keep them warm in the oven until you are ready to get that party started. Repeat the process until the wedges are gone and people stop coming back to the kitchen for more. Make sure you check the temperature of your oil before frying your next batch.

Here are some delicious salsa ideas to serve with your flour tortilla chips:

- Roasted Corn Salsa

- Ranchero Bean Dip

- Guacamole Chunkito dip

To learn how to make these dips, visit Easy Appetizer Recipes. See the info below.

Don't stay in the kitchen too long. You need to have some fun too!

3 Simple Ways to Becoming a Vegetarian

After making the decision to become vegetarian for health reasons, many people wonder how much of their favorite foods they will have to give up.

Two years ago, I wondered the same thing when I made the decision to become vegetarian. The reality is that it is much easier than one might think. It's also a lot more fun too!!

Though anything new can seem a bit intimidating at first, take one step at a time in order not to be overwhelmed.

Now, I enjoy it so much I would never consider going back to mine old and SAD (Standard American Diet) ways. I will give you 3 easy ways to make the transition into your new healthy vegetarian life. Then, a meal plan to help you even more.

1. Think of 3 vegetarian meals you already enjoy or may find easy to convert. Common ones may be a veggie pizza, spaghetti or large dinner salad.

2. Think of 3 recipes you prepare regularly which can be easily adapted to a vegetarian meal using a meat substitute. An example would be B-B-Q "chicken", corn-on-the-cob and baked potato. There are several brands on the market that make a fabulous chicken substitute! Just add your own B-B-Q sauce. Replace a hamburger and fries night with a veggie burger on a whole wheat bun and some grilled veggies or baked fries.

3. Find 3 vegetarian recipes online that you can experiment with. There are many websites with vegetarian recipes to help make the switch easily.

An average family switches between 8 to 10 different dinners anyway. So, if you use the 3 steps, you will have 9 vegetarian meals to switch between, as well.

Next, it's time to think about breakfast. If you are someone that likes bacon and eggs every morning, try a bacon substitute and "egg" substitute with whole wheat toast or bagel instead.

Now, let's take a look at a typical vegetarian meal plan:

Breakfast:

Fruit Smoothie
Bagel with tomato
Nuts

Lunch:

"Chicken" Salad Sandwich (substitute chicken made at home is super yummy!)
Green Salad

Snack:

Fruit Salad
Nuts

Dinner:

Veggie Fajitas
Mexican Beans and Rice
Green Salad

Desert:

Chocolate Chip Cookie

A New Way to Look at a Teenage Diet Plan

Teenage diet plans vary in nutrition and usefulness. A teenager needs a plan developed for the busy years. Overweight often create awkward social interaction and starts a life where food becomes the center of the universe.

You can change the outcome of your teen years or your child's teen years if you adopt a new way of eating. The plan needs to contain easy to follow sound eating patterns that give immediate success and alter eating patterns through out life.

Record the times you overeat. Many weight problems occur because emotional triggers set off the urge to eat. Take time to examine your eating habits.
Are late nights your weakness?
Do you eat when you're bored, sad or lonely?
Do you eat the entire box of cookies when one was all you really wanted?

Understand your eating patterns before you begin any diet and make allowances ahead of time.

Find solutions. If you eat when you're bored, find an alternative. Since weight, loss is the goal, find a form of exercise that you enjoy and substitute it at that time. The activity can be structured or individual. Remember, muscle burns more calories than fat, so the more muscle on your body the more fat you burn. Muscle tones the body and improves your metabolism.

An example of a structure exercise is a ballet class or soccer team. Your deadly time may be late at night, when no class exists. Use that time to schedule exercise in the privacy of your room. Put on the headphones and dance. Learn yoga on the Internet or just do body toning. At the end of the exercise, especially if it is late at night, calm your body down with stretching and a few minutes of meditation.

Set realistic goals. Don't expect an overnight change those types don't last and actually slow the metabolism. A realistic goal of one to two pounds a week doesn't dramatically alter your life style but over the long haul changes your body. Too many times teenage diet plans promise lots of weight loss immediately and don't focus on changes in eating patterns.

Picture yourself thin. After every exercise, session a few minutes of stretching and quiet meditation puts relaxes the body and mind. Visualize your body changed, tone and thin. Glue a picture of your face on the body you hope to attain. This gives you a picture hold in your mind.

Don't miss a meal. Eat three meals a day but break them down to six mini meals. Instead of eating two pieces of toast with breakfast eat one and take a granola bar for your mid morning meal. Keep a piece of fruit back from lunch and have it in the afternoon, after school. Select your favorite at dinner and use it as an evening snack. Many teen diet plans don't include even three meals a day and set you up for failure.

Substitute high calorie food for foods that contain fewer calories. Throw out the fries and chips and try a few vegetables. Fast food isn't out of reach, just eat less of it or make it fresh.

Subway's spokesman, Jared, started his diet by switching to a 6-inch turkey sub for lunch and 12-inch veggie for supper. He cut the mayo and the cheese. He added tons of vegetables, hot peppers and spicy mustard. He also increased his exercise pattern by walking everywhere.

You don't have to eat subs. Switch from a large burger to a junior, cut out the cheese and mayonnaise and get extra lettuce. If you eat out, focus on salads and cut the fat. Fried anything is not diet fare.

A 1500-calorie diet causes weight loss, but requires a lot of your attention to count the calories. Use the rule of thumb. Eat as much fresh fruit and vegetables as you can hold, limit the meat in your diet to small portions at mealtime, allow for two pieces of bread every meal and eat smaller amounts of fried or fatty foods. One individual serving bag of chips per week as a treat should be the maximum. Substitute cheese and dessert for a cup of plain yogurt and add some fresh fruit or berries to it. Drink a glass of cool water with every meal. Additional beverages allowed are ice tea with no sugar or fresh unsweetened fruit or vegetable juice. Drink diet pop sparingly. It makes you retain water.

Your teenage diet plan can go on vacation for an hour or two when a special dinner or get together occurs. Just get right back on the diet after it's over.
